KEEPING YOU INFORMED ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF OXFORD'S FIRST NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR 60 YEARS

WE ARE BUILDING OXFORD'S FIRST NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL IN 60 YEARS

The first new secondary school to built in Oxford in more than 60 years is being delivered at the site of the former Harlow Centre in Marston. This new secondary school, The Swan School, is being built to address an acute shortage in secondary school places in Oxford from September 2019. Marston is one of the areas most affected by the school's places shortage. The redevelopment of the Harlow Centre site also presents an opportunity to deliver much better facilities for Meadowbrook College which currently occupies the former Harlow Centre building, as well as new outdoor facilities for St Nicholas' Primary School.

Galliford Try is the contractor who will be building the new schools, and this website has been created to provide a “one-stop-shop” of information for local residents and other interested stakeholder groups for news and information about the construction programme.

WE ARE REDEVELOPING THE HARLOW CENTRE IN MARSTON

In October 2018, Oxford City Council granted planning permission for the redevelopment of the Harlow Centre in Marston. The redevelopment will deliver a new secondary school for Oxford - The Swan School, a new purpose-built facility for Meadowbrook College, and new outdoor facilities for St Nicholas' Primary School.

Access to the new Meadowbrook College building will remain the same as it currently is, with the new building relocated to a location to the south east of the old Harlow Centre building, which is no longer fit-for-purpose and is being demolished. The new Swan School will be located to the north of Meadowbrook College and will have its own dedicated access directly from Marston Ferry Road. There will be no pedestrian or vehicular access to The Swan School through the grounds of either Meadowbrook College or St Nicholas' Primary School.

WE WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED AS CONSTRUCTION PROGRESSES ON SITE

Work on the redevelopment of the site commenced on 18 February 2019. The initial phase of work involves the creation of a new site access point at the location of the proposed Swan School access from Marston Ferry Road. This will ensure that all construction traffic accesses the site via this controlled access point off Marston Ferry Road, avoiding any disruption to residents in the Carter Estate.

The anticipated timetable of work on site is as follows:

February 2019

Construction work commences
Temporary Section 278 works commences
All ecology seasonal works completed
April 2019 Section 278 access works completed
May 2019 Construction works on Swan School and Meadowbrook College buildings commence
August 2020 Meadowbrook College complete
September 2020 Meadowbrook College and new Swan School open
December 2020 Project works complete
